To celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day, and Folsom’s 15-year status as a Tree City USA, the Sacramento Tree Foundation partnered up with the City of Folsom to care for some beautiful mature trees over the weekend. Local residents spread wood chips around two of Folsom’s sprawling heritage oaks near Castle Park/ Folsom Kids Play Park.

Natural wood chips, also known as arborist wood chips, are one of the best things you can provide for your tree. Mulch protects roots from exposure to extreme temperatures, retains moisture in the soil, reduces weeds, and provides nutrients as it decomposes. By regularly caring for our trees, we help ensure that all of the benefits they bring to our community can last for generations.

These impressive oaks are about 70 inches in diameter and estimated to be over 350 years old! Our volunteers did an amazing job, bringing so much energy and enthusiasm to to the task of caring for these trees. When asked for a one-word reflection of their time mulching with us we received responses such as: inspiring, fun, community, give-back, motivational, and of course mulch!!
