The tupelo is most well-known for its vibrant red fall color and tolerance of poor-draining soils. In the fall, tupelos put on quite a show as their shiny green leaves change to brilliant shades of cherry red. Female trees can produce small inconspicuous berries that decorate the red-leaved branches in the fall. Tupelos love moist environments and can handle standing water and poor drainage with little-to-no damage, making it a good candidate for areas with dense clay-packed soil.
