SUPERVISES: Urban Ecology Manager and Education Programs Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Urban Forest Renewal is responsible for leading the integration and delivery of programs and services at the Sacramento Tree Foundation. The programs are Sacramento Shade, Community Shade, NATURE, Native Plant Propagation, and Save the Elms. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director’s primary role is to ensure that all programs and services are working in concert to effectively convey and meet the strategic vision, goals and objectives of the Sacramento Tree Foundation.

The Director of Urban Forest Renewal will coach and advise key staff on how to lead their service and program areas based on shared values, including but not limited to offering excellent customer service, exceeding partnership expectations and growing high performing teams. In addition, the Director is expected to grow an expanded customer and partnership base that promotes the importance of optimizing urban forest benefits and services.

The Director of Urban Forest Renewal is an integral member of the Sacramento Tree Foundation’s leadership team. Working closely with the Director of Community Relations, the Director of Urban Forest Renewal will grow the Sacramento Tree Foundation as a respected, reliable source for the growth and management of urban forests both locally and regionally.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Management

1. Uphold and promote the vision and mission while nurturing the Tree Foundation’s values in support of a purposeful organizational climate.

2. Expand, implement, and oversee assigned program and service areas to increase community support for and growth of the urban forest.

3. Serve on the Executive Team to ensure program and service deliverables exemplify organizational goals and values as adopted in the strategic plan and guiding principles.

4. Serve as the direct supervisor to the Urban Ecology and Education Programs Managers.

5. Be the primary liaison between SMUD and the Tree Foundation in order to nurture and support one of the Tree Foundation’s most visible and viable partnerships.

6. Support Managers as they coordinate planning, resources and integration of services and programs with special attention to quarterly programmatic and fiscal reviews.

7. Cultivate new partnerships and nurture existing partnerships that further the organization’s mission and build upon mutual goals and benefits.

8. Ensure that services and programs are appropriately resourced and managers have the guidance, resources and metrics to succeed.

9. Ensure reports are produced in an accurate and timely fashion.

10. Coach staff in leadership, customer service and team building to grow their competencies and capacity to excel in their work, including the resolution of problems and challenges.

11. Mange staff proactively and produce staff performance appraisals annually.

12. Ensure that policies are uniformly implemented and where required oversee the development and implementation of policy including: technical standards, operating procedures, work standards.

Administrative

1. Work with the managers to build annual action plans and budgets that include measurable deliverables and performance indicators.

2. Oversee the Urban Ecology and Education Programs budgets and the actions plans.

3. Assist in grant and partnership agreement solicitation, evaluation and preparation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree helpful but not required. Minimum 5 years program and project management experience required. Staff management experience required. Experience with non-profit organizations required. Experience delivering education and training programs relations helpful but not required.

EXPERIENCE: At least 5 years of management experienced required; experience with non-profit organizations helpful but not required

SKILLS: Strong management skills; excellent writing and communication skills; must be highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and have basic PC maintenance skills.

TEMPERAMENT/SOFT SKILLS: Must have a good sense of humor and an ability to get along with a wide variety of people. Must be quick on your feet and highly flexible. Must be comfortable working in an organization dedicated to community health and equity and protecting natural resources through direct advocacy and community engagement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for two direct reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is an at-will, salaried, full-time, and exempt position.
