Community Forester I

JOB TITLE: Community Forester I

DEPARTMENT: Education Department

REPORTS TO: Education Programs Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Forester I is a critical member of Sacramento Tree Foundation’s Education Department. This position supports the organization’s customer service and educational programs by helping to: teach the value of trees, encourage informed citizen action, and by offering expertise on best tree planting and care practices. The Community Forester I works to provide informational and courteous communication with the public and promotes Tree Foundation programs. This position receives and places phone calls in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner to meet the customer’s needs, while managing customer service demand and database information.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Customer Service and Record Keeping 80%

  • The Community Forester I is a primary point of contact between the public and the Tree Foundation. As such, this position is expected to represent and promote Tree Foundation programs and mission.
  • Provide impeccable customer service to all customers, volunteers, and community members via all forms of communication including phone, e-mail, social media, and in person.
  • Work within Salesforce database to: create new leads, modify information for accuracy, create and calendar appointments, upload customer forms, create and maintain reports, etc.
  • Receive and place phone calls in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Plan, prioritize and schedule appointments in Salesforce.
  • Act as a liaison between the Education Department and SMUD to obtain missing data elements, such as phone number or email addresses.
  • Manage tasks for follow-up communications and record management.

Site Visits 10%

  • Meet with customers virtually – utilizing online conferencing technology (such as Join Me) – to strategically site tree planting locations and species that will provide the most overall community benefits (such as energy savings, increased property values, improved public health, etc).
  • Provide appropriate and understandable information to customers regarding tree planting and care techniques.
  • Create planting maps for both customer information and internal record keeping.
  • Occasionally perform site visits in person at homes, businesses, schools, or parks based on demand.

Outreach, Education & Administration 10%

  • Attend events to represent the organization and provide education
  • Support the development, implementation, and distribution of educational materials in print and electronic forms.
  • Attend trainings, meetings, workshops, etc. as needed – occasionally during evenings and weekends.
  • Coordinate and lead educational workshops as needed – occasionally during evenings and weekends.
  • Carefully manage daily calendar to meet customer service demand, special projects, and office work.
  • Write and achieve an annual work plan to include measurable goals.
  • Work as part of a team to implement the Tree Foundation’s mission to build the best urban forest.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High school diploma

EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years of office experience required. Experience with non-profit, mission based organizations preferred.

SKILLS: Excellent customer service, communication and organizational skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable with utilizing web-based tools. Candidate should possess flexibility, time management skills, good judgment, and the ability to work independently and interact with diverse audiences. Class C driver’s license. Experience with Salesforce and Google Earth is a plus. Bi-lingual (Spanish, Hmong, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Cantonese ).is a plus

TEMPERAMENT/SOFT SKILLS: Must be comfortable working in a mission-based, non-profit environment. The ideal candidate for the position will have a passion for our mission and a commitment to excellent customer service.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends

Ability to lift 30 pounds

Casual office environment

Both outdoor and in office work is required for this position. Therefore, Community Forester I may be exposed to extremes in weather including heat, rain, and freezing temperatures as well as extended periods of sitting and standing.
